DAVEY TRIBUTE

Davey was seriously injured On Monday, July 12, 1993, when the helicopter he was piloting crashed in the infield at Talladega Superspeedway. His life ended at 32 years old, died on July 13, 1993,when he was at his peak as a driver. NASCAR Fans will always remember Davey as a Superstar in the Racing Family.

His helicopter was only a foot from landing safely at his home track of Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama. He and a buddy had flown there from Hueytown, sixty miles away, to watch a friend test a car. Suddenly, the helicopter shot up 25 feet into the air. It spun counterclockwise, rolled and crashed. Its tail rotor struck a fence on the way down. The pilot sustained massive head injuries. For 16 hours he hung between life and death. His legion of fans held a constant vigil--moment by moment, hour by hour--hoping to hear some good news. It never came.

The tragic news sped through the racing community and around the country. We couldn¹t believe it. We were in shock. Despite 19 Winston Cup Series wins, including the 1992 Daytona 500. How could he die so young? To his fans he was more than Number 28. He was a friend. He was young, handsome, and a winner. But even more, he was warm, and his smile told us we were important.

Davey was no stranger to suffering and tragedy. In 1988, his father, Bobby Allison (the former NASCAR great), crashed at Pocono International Raceway. He injured his brain. Davey watched his agonizing recovery. Bobby made it, but his career was over. Then four years later, Davey¹s younger brother, Clifford Allison, was killed in a stock car crash during practice. Davey himself had a close call at Pocono that year. His car flipped eleven times. He escaped with a broken right arm and collarbone and a fractured and dislocated wrist. But that did not stop him from racing again. The next Sunday he revved up for his faithful fans at Talladega.

TEARS IN HEAVEN by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings

Would you know my name if I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same if I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven.

Would you hold my hand if I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand if I saw you in heaven?
I'll find my way through night and day,
'Cause I know I just can't stay here in heaven.

Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart, have you begging please, begging please.

Beyond the door there's peace I'm sure,
And I know there'll be no more tears in heaven.
